Can you tell me how you work?
Our therapists use an insight-oriented approach informed by depth psychology, psychodynamic therapy, and trauma-focused therapy like somatic experiencing. Your therapist is trained to attend to your whole experience: thoughts, feelings, behaviors, physical sensations, and your imagination. He or she relies on a theoretical framework informed by their real-time experience with you to develop an approach to understanding your inner world. In particular, they'll link your present life with your earliest experiences, your internal world and your external behaviors, your conscious and unconscious processes, and his or her experience with you in the context of the therapeutic relationship. In doing so, they help you illuminate and map your inner landscape so that you can better understand yourself and release old habits and tendencies that no longer serve you.
Will a therapist give me advice on how to handle certain situations?
There is a lot to unpack behind the question, "what should I do?" A therapist generally doesn't offer advice in the sense of providing solutions to your problems. While a solution might appear desirable at times, it's ultimately disempowering. Rather, your therapist will guide you in examining your inner processes with an eye towards exposing fixed views and attitudes that make your problems appear more challenging than they are. In some cases, a therapist might also share their perspective as a way of providing supplementary information.
How long will therapy take?
It is difficult to predict how long therapy will take. For some, it will last several months; for others, it will last several years. However, it is important to remember that lasting change often takes time. People who stay in therapy for two years or more have the highest degree of satisfaction and the greatest improvement in their overall functioning.
